The energy transition requires greater resilience of the power system, which is increasingly dependent on the distribution grid. Instead of synchronous generators from large power plants in the transmission grid, the power converters of battery storage systems as well as wind and photovoltaic plants in the lower grid levels must now ensure the inertia and stability of the system. Fraunhofer IEE is therefore now working with TU Braunschweig, SMA Solar Technology AG and other partners in the research project »Distribution Grid 2030plus« to develop solutions and products that will enable the grids to be operated reliably with the help of the power converters even after nuclear and coal-fired power plants are shut down.

The aim of the »Distribution Grid 2030plus« project is to develop tools for the dynamic simulation and analysis of distribution grids and to promote the development of grid-forming power converters. Another focus is on the preparation of field tests by the partners, which will be carried out in a subsequent project. A special focus of the researchers is on the dynamic interactions that can arise between the converters in the distribution grid as a result of grid-forming operation. The scientists are also investigating possible interactions with the protection technology and equipment in the distribution grid.

Thomas Degner, project coordinator at Fraunhofer IEE: »The distribution grids have a key role to play in the energy transition: This is where a large part of the renewable electricity is fed in, and this is where new consumers such as heat pumps and wallboxes are installed. With our research project, we are helping to ensure that distribution grids can meet their responsibility for security of supply. In this way, we are strengthening the resilience of the entire energy system.«
