In the joint research program "Smart Infrastructure for the Transformation of the Energy System", TNO Innovation for Life and Fraunhofer are working intensively to enable a smooth energy transition and are identifying and analyzing the benefits of innovations, new businesses and economic activities that accompany it. A particular focus is on the industrial sector and the role of hydrogen, as uncertainties and research needs for decarbonization of industry are high and the use of hydrogen currently is discussed as an important long-term strategic measure to fulfill climate neutrality in industry in both countries.
The aim of the project is to provide the basis for cost-effective long-term decarbonization strategies in industry and the associated strategies for energy infrastructure development. The added value of the collaboration is the extension of the current energy system and energy infrastructure models focusing on specific energy carriers to more integrated infrastructure models for the simultaneous assessment of the energy infrastructure for electricity, gas, heat and hydrogen.
