H2-Startnetz Brandenburg - Feasibility study for the establishment and expansion of an efficient hydrogen transport network in Brandenburg

With the development of a »Strategy for the Development of a Hydrogen Economy in the State of Brandenburg« (MWAE 2021) and its embedding in the Energy Strategy 2040 (MWAE 2022), the state of Brandenburg has taken an important step towards the development of a regional hydrogen economy. In the course of implementing the strategy, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy of the State of Brandenburg (MWAE) commissioned the consortium of INFRACON, Fraunhofer IEG, Fraunhofer ISI and the Reiner Lemoine Institute to develop the basis for establishing a hydrogen transport network in the State of Brandenburg. The goal of the feasibility study is the development of a superordinate hydrogen network that connects regional hydrogen producers, storage facilities and end users and fits into a Germany-wide hydrogen infrastructure.

The focus of this study is to identify the main potential hydrogen sinks and sources in Brandenburg and to derive an efficient network routing with the examination of the possible conversion of existing natural gas networks.  The study provides a solid basis for the development of a hydrogen economy and was able to show how hydrogen demand and hydrogen production in Brandenburg will develop, what a future hydrogen network in Brandenburg could look like and what investment framework is necessary.
